Where it all began!
Hi there! My name is Phillipe Horowitz and I’m passionate about everything related to the ocean, especially Surfski paddling. My journey began in 2002 when I became a kayak nstructor after spending a year at the CREPS Bretagne, Dinard. I also earned a special qualification in Sea Kayaking. Back then, Surfskis were still relatively unknown in France, but I’ve always been drawn to exploring new ways to enjoy the ocean.
The Move to Fuerteventura and Starting MAEVA Kayak
In 2014, I made a big life change and moved to the beautiful island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Spain. It was there that I launched MAEVA Kayak, a venture dedicated to sharing my passion for paddling with others. My first experience paddling with a Surfski on the island made me realize how incredible these boats are. They are fast, safe, and easy to steer, with no need to learn an Eskimo Roll. Over the years, I also discovered Outrigger Canoes, which further expanded the offerings at MAEVA Kayak. Now, we offer Surfski and Outrigger classes, excursions, and even Downwind camps!
The Fuerteventura Downwind Camp
Our Downwind Camp, officially launched in 2022, is located on the North Shore of Fuerteventura, in a lovely spot called Corralejo. The island, just 100km from the African coast, provides perfect year-round paddling conditions. The weather here is incredible—endless springtime with ocean temperatures around 20°C and winds blowing between 10-20 knots. The camp is supported by two major brands, Nordic Kayaks (Surfski) and NALU Canoes (Outrigger), which guarantees high-quality gear for all participants.
We host a week-long Ocean Camp with 6 paddling sessions, but participants can also join for a few days if they prefer. Each session is tailored to the weather and the paddlers’ skill level. Our paddling spots vary, with some sessions starting in Corralejo and others requiring a drive to different parts of the island. Every session includes a briefing and a warm-up, ensuring you’re ready for an exciting day on the water. We promise you’ll sleep well and be ready to paddle again the next day!

The winter months are our busiest season, as paddlers from across Europe come to escape the cold. Fuerteventura is becoming a favorite spot for elite paddlers too. Notable athletes like Walter Bouzan and members of the NK team from Germany, led by Gordan Harbrecht, frequently visit to train in our ideal winter conditions. Our small, personalized groups (max 8 paddlers) ensure you get the attention and coaching you need to make progress fast.
One of my personal favorite paddling routes is from Corralejo, where you can explore the beautiful and technical Lobos Island. Another epic run is Lanzarote to Fuerteventura, which we like to call our “local Molokai.” Whether you’re looking for huge waves or a peaceful paddle, Fuerteventura has something for everyone, and with almost no traffic on the water. It’s a truly special place to paddle.

We prefer to keep our groups small, with a maximum of 8 paddlers for a more personalized experience, but we can accommodate Ocean Camps with as few as 3 paddlers.
